Stockholm's northern archipelago at its very best

Stora Timrarö — the real archipelago

Welcome to an island for those seeking tranquility, sea, cliffs, swimming and a genuine archipelago feeling without travelling far from Stockholm.

Experience the island

Swimming, cliffs and archipelago life

On Stora Timrarö, nature takes centre stage. This is not a place for neon lights, nightclubs and queues. It's a place for breakfast on the veranda, salty swims, evening sun and conversations that are allowed to take their time.

Swimming & cliffs

Sun-warmed granite slabs, evening dips and calm coves make Stora Timrarö a natural swimming island for long summer days.

Nature & tranquility

Here, pines, mountains, the sea and birdsong set the rhythm — a place where everyday life stays on the mainland.

Boat life & archipelago

Its location along the Furusund channel gives the island a natural archipelago character — close enough for a weekend, secluded enough for a holiday.

Stay on the island

Archipelago living with the sea as your neighbour

For those who want to stay longer, there's the chance to experience Stora Timrarö as it's meant to be experienced: slowly, close to nature, with the sea a constant presence.

Local roots

Timrarö's own archipelago patron

On Stora Timrarö there are people who don't just live on the island, but carry it with them. Patrik Baneryd is one of them.

As an islander and one of the larger local landowners, Patrik holds a special place in Timrarö's present-day story. He combines a landowner's long-term responsibility with an islander's everyday love for the place: the trails, the coves, the water, the cliffs, and the particular tranquility that makes Stora Timrarö something more than just another island in the archipelago.

“The best thing about Stora Timrarö is that the island still feels genuine. Here you'll find the calm of the archipelago, the presence of nature, and a community that can't be built to order.”

About the island

An island with history, water and red granite

Stora Timrarö lies in the Stockholm archipelago, in Österåker municipality, between Ljusterö and the mainland. The landscape is shaped by the archipelago's classic contrasts: mountains, coniferous forest, water, coves and open views.

The island lies in Furusundsleden, the northern of the main shipping channels into Stockholm. Ships have passed here for centuries, and an inn is already marked on the island on Carl Gripenhielm's archipelago chart of 1690.
